KB08030602 Installing clamAV ver 0.95 Anti-virus

ClamAV 0.95 has been replaced - please use the most recent version - see more...

Working with previous versions of ClamAV

Clam 0.95

Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server

You need to be running Mailtraq 2.15.0.2574 or above.
See 'How to Upgrade'.

Download

1) Download the latest ClamAV from here: Download

Choose the "ClamAV x.xx.x - Installer" package.

Execute

2) Run the download and you MUST install in "c:\clamav"
Do not change the install directory.

2.a) Execute the file:  "c:\clamav\freshclam.exe"

freshclam will download the latest virus database. Allow the download to complete before taking the next steps.

Setting up ClamAV integration

Open the Mailtraq Console, Options | Anti Virus Integration ...

The Anti-Virus Manager will open (see image, right)

Click on the 'CLAM' line to select it, and click the [Properties] button (don't worry that it says it can't connect to it yet, that is simply because you haven't told it where to find it...)

The 'ClamD Configuration' dialog will open.

Set ClamD to use Port 3310, (adjusting any firewall restrictions required elsewhere on your system),
Set the Path to clamd.exe to "c:\clamav\clamd.exe"

Tip:
If the Mailtraq anti-virus dialogue appears to freeze, use the Windows Task Manager to find and kill the "clamd.exe" process and repeat step (4).  This can happen if there is an existing installation or if it locks up during first execution.

Then, [OK] back to the Console.

The status line should now show Installed as 'Yes' and Status as 'Operational'

Ensure the checkbox against CLAM is checked to tell Mailtraq to run the emails through CLAM.

Mailtraq will now manage starting and running ClamAV.

Set the 'Updates' below.

Testing
Mailtraq can run a test against the industry standard EICAR-AV-Test by using the [Test] button in the main Manager window.
Be aware other Antivirus software on the machine can prevent the test from completing.

Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server

1) Use this download: Download

You will need to accept the download as 'safe'.

2) Run it and when the list of installable options appears, ensure that everything is checked (particularly, check "contributions" -- the one item unchecked).  Do not change anything -- leave the install directory as default

3) Use Notepad (not Write) to edit:
"c:\clamav-devel\etc\clamd.conf"

Search for the sequence "#TCPSocket 3310".
Erase the "#" character that precedes this and save.
Do NOT make any other changes.

4) Use cmd (as Administrator) to go to
"c:\clamav-devel\thirdparty\runclamd\"
enter "runclamd -install"

5) Enter "services.msc" and find "Run Clamd".
Edit the properties and change startup to "Automatic"

6) Start the "Run Clamd" service.

7) Use Windows Task Manager to check that "clamd.exe" is running in the SYSTEM account.
If it isn't, stop the "Run Clamd" service, wait at least a minute, and go to (6).
Repeat until clamd.exe runs and stabilises at 0% cpu.

8) In Mailtraq Clam Properties, set port to "3310" and leave the path blank. Then, [OK] back to the Console.

9) Shut down and restart Mailtraq - check that Clam is active.

The status line should now show Installed as 'Yes' and Status as 'Operational'

Ensure the checkbox against CLAM is checked to tell Mailtraq to run the emails through CLAM.

Mailtraq will now manage starting and running ClamAV.

Testing
Mailtraq can run a test against the industry standard EICAR-AV-Test by using the [Test] button in the main Manager window.
Be aware other Antivirus software on the machine can prevent the test from completing.

10) Set the 'Updates' (below)

Updates

You should update clamAV's virus signatures regularly by running C:\clamAV\freshclam.exe
(or for W7/W2008: C:\clamav-devel\bin\freshclam.exe)  which is included in the downloads above.

This should be set to run at least daily as a Windows Scheduled task?

You should check from time to time that the updates are happening as expected.

ClamAV status in Mailtraq AV Manager

You can confirm the update is working by checking the version status and update date & time in the Mailtraq Anti-Virus Manager dialog.

Configuration Tips

Temp Directory
ClamAV requires access to C:\Windows\Temp directory. If that directory does not exist you should create it.

Clam 0.92
Information about the older implementation of Clam AV (0.92), including how to move to the new version, is available: here ...
