KB01120901 Using the Content Barring (blacklists/whitelists)

You need to place specific url or ip addresses in the blacklist. For example, to block access to all usa microsoft content ...

www.microsoft.com

or to ban all sites

*
www.*
http://*

... and select the "Ban entire web site" mode. You can then enter individual web pages within that site to the whitelist if you want to permit access to those pages only.

and in the white list, to enable the whole of a site:

www.xyz.com/*

but watch out for sites like the bbc which need

*.bbc.co.uk/*

An alternative would be to create a new phrase file and add the single word ...

microsoft

... on a line of its own. That will also prevent access to the entire site and it adds trapped url to the ban cache which you can view and manipulate by clicking on the View Ban Cache button on the URLs tab.

Notes regardomg whitelist entries:

  1. If a URL redirects, you need the redirected URL as well.
  2. If a URL redirects to an IP address you need to put the IP address on its own; i.e. you will get a message like "http://64.177.50.49 is banned" but you only need to put "64.177.50.49" in the whitelist.txt to make it work. Putting in "http://64.177.50.49" wont work.
  3. Visiting a page full of ads usually blocks the ads because the ads link with a 'banned' URL (eg www.adlink.com/34ae234/morecrap.gif) it does not clog up the screen BUT you will get "Access to URL is banned" messages all over the screen instead.
  4. Some sites (www.microsoft.com) use sub-domain'ed references for images - they use c.microsoft.com/images/xxx.gif etc. so you won't see them.
  5. If you change the black/white lists, you probably need to clear the Temporary Internet files cache in your browser otherwise it keeps trying to retrieve the cached page and therefore you wont see any changes.
