Mailtraq provides an ideal platform for connecting your Palm OS wireless PDA or Smartphone - such as the very popular Treo 600 and Treo 650 - to send and receive email.

POP3

Mailtraq Essential and Mailtraq Professional both provide a POP3 service on the standard Port 110 that you can use to collect email with Snappermail, and an SMTP service so that you can send mail.

IMAP

Mailtraq Professional also provides an IMAP service on the standard Port 143 that you can use to collect email with Snappermail,and an SMTP service so that you can send mail.

Configuring Mailtraq

POP3

Mailtraq starts the POP3 service automatically when you install Mailtraq. In order to access POP3 from outside the LAN you will have to open any firewall on Port 110. If you are using a router you will need to set the port forwarding/NAT so that Port 110 traffic is passed to the Mailtraq machine. Snappermail will then be able to collect mail from your mailbox in Mailtraq.

IMAP

IMAP is available in Mailtraq Professional editions and can easily be added to the basic services that Mailtraq provides at start up.

In the Mailtraq Console go to Options | Services,
and when the Service Manger opens
 Add - Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)

SMTP

Mailtraq starts the SMTP service automatically when you install Mailtraq. In order to send mail from Snappermail on your smartphone you will need to set the Relay access on the SMTP service - otherwise Mailtraq will reject the messages you are trying to send. This is explained below.

Configuring Snappermail

POP3 Account - Server settings

Incoming Mail:
POP3 Server: [enter the public IP address or URL of your machine running Mailtraq]
Username: [enter your User name in Mailtraq]
Password: [enter your User password in Mailtraq]

Outgoing Mail:
SMTP Server: [enter the public IP address or URL of your machine running Mailtraq]
Username: not required
Password: not required

Username: [enter your User name in Mailtraq]
Password: [enter your User name in Mailtraq]

To configure the Mailtraq SMTP service for use outside your LAN

In order to send mail from Snappermail (and so, from outside your LAN) Mailtraq has to be set up to allow relaying of emails but not become an 'open-relay'.

In the Mailtraq Console go to: Options | Services, and from the Service Manager select 'SMTP-Mail Server' then click the [Properties] button. Then select the Relaying tab.

If you are only using the POP3 service then select:

[x] Relay for machines recently collecting POP3 mail

This setting will allow Snappermail to send email via Mailtraq by using the fact that Snappermail has recently authenticated itself to Mailtraq by collecting POP3 mail.

If you are using IMAP then select:

[x] Use SMTP User Authentication

This setting will allow Snappermail to send mail via Mailtraq by checking that the username and password provided by Snappermail match a valid Mailtraq User. If this SMTP AUTH option is enabled, all connecting clients - local or remote - must authenticate to relay mail through this SMTP service instance.
