Training the System

Using Webmail to train the Anti-spam system

Anti-spam training is normally done using the Webmail interface.

Access to Webmail for the User must be enabled in the Console at the User | Properties | Mail tab, and the Webmail Admin must be set to allow the User to specify their own anti-spam database (this is the Default case).

When Mailtraq is newly installed you will need to tell it what type of messages you consider spam and which you consider not spam. You need to train it both ways - spam and not spam. When the Anti-spam system is enabled, the following buttons will be found at the bottom of each webmail page.

Mailtraq will inform you if you need to do more training - as illustrated.

Teaching Mailtraq is very simple.

Beside each email there is a check box that allows you to select the email. Select the emails you consider to be not spam, and then click the 'Not Spam' button. Then repeat the process for messages you consider to be spam, and click the 'Spam' button.

Mailtraq will quickly learn what type of messages you consider to be spam, and will display its decision by means of checks/ticks and crosses.

In the illustration above the strong-red cross indicates you have explicitly told Mailtraq that the email is spam.

The light-red cross indicates an email that Mailtraq believes is spam. You can accept that choice, or change it by selecting the email and either marking it as 'Not Spam' - when it will get a green check/tick, or confirming it as 'Spam' to reinforce the choice.

If a mistake is made, then the Administrator can correct the spam/not-spam choice in the Console view (see next page).

IMPORTANT

It is essential to train both on [Spam] and [Not spam]. If you only notify the system on [Spam] then is can come to 'believe' that all your messages are spam, leading to false positives. So report both good and bad emails in roughly equal measure.

White Lists

The Administrator can also set White Lists via the Console to ensure mail from trusted senders is never marked as spam.
